Understanding Food Processing and Labeling
“May contain peanuts.”  “Made on shared equipment with eggs.”  “Made in the same facility as tree nuts.”  These are some of the precautionary advisory labels that consumers with food allergies may encounter when purchasing food.  But the decision of when to use these labels, if at all, and what they should say, can vary from one manufacturer to another.  In this session, which includes some follow up to the morning session on food labeling laws, you will hear directly from the Grocery Manufacturing Association (GMA) on their work within the food industry on allergen labeling in their Food Labeling workshop and how allergen advisory statements are addressed in their manual for industry, “Managing Food Allergens in Processing Establishments”.  In addition, GMA will discuss how the federal Food Safety Modernization Act, signed into law in 2011, with the first general compliance date being in September 2016, addresses allergen controls.  As part of this session, hear from one large manufacturer on how they raise allergen awareness and educate their employees on allergen risk as part of their food safety culture.  Learn how this company goes beyond the label to ensure safe food for its consumers.  To conclude this session, learn about a new industry driven initiative, SmartLabel™ ,which is a technology that is intended to provide product information to consumers.
