Microbiome: How the Inner Workings of the Gut May Cause and Treat Food Allergy

This session will examine how 21st century lifestyle practices have depleted protective bacterial populations that live in our intestines and contributed to a generational increase in food allergies. Understanding how intestinal bacteria regulate allergic sensitization to food is informing the development of new kinds of therapeutics that restore healthy gut barrier function.

Cathy Nagler

Cathryn R. Nagler is the Bunning Food Allergy Professor and Professor of Pathology, Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Chicago. She graduated with honors from Barnard College, Columbia University. Dr. Nagler obtained her PhD from the Sackler Institute of Biomedical Science at N.Y.U. School of Medicine and did a postdoctoral fellowship at M.I.T. She was Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Immunology) at Harvard Medical School prior to joining the University of Chicago as Professor of Pathology and The College in 2009.
